A Letter to My Friend: Gratitude, Growth, and the Beauty of Lasting Friendship

Dear James,

I still can’t quite understand how we became friends. When did it even begin?

We weren’t in the same program in college. Yes, we had mutual friends—but still, how did we happen?

All I know is this: your presence has always brought me a quiet sense of calm.

There’s something about our connection. We’re often the loudest in the room—the ones who laugh the hardest at the silliest jokes. And somehow, in that shared energy, we found each other.

And I’m grateful that I did.

It still amazes me how our friendship endured through the pandemic. Maybe it was those occasional lunches and dinners—the rare but meaningful moments we carved out despite everything.

But then again, maybe it’s just who we are.

You’re the kind of friend who doesn’t require constant conversation. Low-maintenance, yet deeply present. We don’t need to talk every day—but when we do meet, it feels like no time has passed at all. We always have too much to say, too much to laugh about.

And I still remember that promise you once made—that you wouldn’t settle down until I found “the one.”

Well… unfortunate for both of us, I suppose.

But I digress.

James, thank you for always including me in your talks, especially when you speak to your students during retreat programs at our alma mater. It means more to me than I probably show.

You often say you’re blessed to have us—but I hope you know how much you mean to the team too. Your presence, your lightness, your joy—just being you—made everything feel complete.

You bring people together in a way that feels effortless.

I’m so happy seeing how naturally you’ve grown into your role on campus. You have so much to celebrate. You’ve inspired countless students, and your gift for connecting with people—guiding them, encouraging them—has truly made a difference in their lives.

You’ve become the kind of teacher I once wished for when I was younger.

And that, to me, is something to be proud of.

Even with everything you’ve achieved—a stable life, a meaningful career, a place where you belongI still believe there’s so much more waiting for you.

You have so much potential yet to unfold.

And I can’t wait to see you discover all of it.

Maybe one day, we’ll finally introduce our “loved ones” to each other—and laugh about all the things we once said and promised.

Until then, we keep growing, in our own time.

I love you so much.

All my love,
Joy
